Apparently my blog is parental-controlled / filtered / censored content on the O2 Mobile network # HT @ramtopsrac @drbexl

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, in one sense – for instance I occasionally have the temerity to mention words like “sex” and “porn” in a unprudish and often positive manner; also I have a history of being blocked as a hacking website which is deeply silly since it implies the censors can’t differentiate between hacking and security other than perhaps the latter has a corporate website backing it.

Strange that they make the opposite distinction for porn: that which is in a newspaper presumably is not “adult content” ?

That said: my friend Rachel is also blocked (Defining Policy, Category: Religion) as is Dr Bex Lewis (Defining Policy, Category: Business)

And the BBC is rather complex:

  1. For the O2 checker it should be noted that there are three categories
    1) open access
    2) default (which is the category phones that haven’t had the adult-blocks removed on)
    3) parental control (which seems to be a whitelist of specifically child-suitable sites)

ORGs block-monitoring has concentrated on type 2, and not type 3.
