…and you have to delete all the stuff in the red boxes to get it to work on a modern browser under WordPress.

tl;dr – The BBC system needs work if it wants to be seen to be taking sharing and embedding seriously.

  1. Comments from elsewhere, first, a technical boffin:

Looking at those urls, looks like the link is from a BBC worldwide site or some legacy part of the BBC using an old version of the embedded media player (it mentions v2, the latest is v3.1). Unfortunately it’s not as simple as Google make it seem, if you just want to embed a flash player then it probably is, the BBC want to use HTML5 as a priority and Android needs a special playing app, dynamically alter bitrates and support rewinding live streams […]

    My proposal:

Is there a team with which I could raise the issue? Certainly it *can* be as easy as YouTube make it appear, since using an IFRAME hides a multitude of sins, allows the backend team to fix the code in a ‘futureproof’ way, and works just fine on my Nexus7 as well as all my Macs.

In short: this is an opportunity.

Incidentally, the embed code is for the video mentioned here, posted yesterday on the News website: http://dropsafe.crypticide.com/article/11051

  2. Hi alecm,

Interesting – can I ask where you found the embed code – I’d like to have a try myself please?

    Thanks
