This shouldn’t be a problem as that’s what fragmentation is for.

Sadly enough some systems set the “Don’t Fragment” bit and fail to handle any “ICMP fragmentation required” packets that may get sent as a result, causing the router between the unlabeled and the labeled networks to be unable to route the packets.

The jumbo frame support in many of the network drivers in Solaris provides an easy solution, permitting the packets on the labeled network to be made slightly bigger so they can accommodate the extra space needed for the labels:

On the CIPSO-network-facing interfaces on Solaris Trusted Extentions (or OpenSolaris Trusted Extensions) just do:

ifconfig <interface> mtu 1512

after you’ve updated the network interface driver configuration (by tweaking e1000g.conf/igb.conf/…) – and you’re done.

CIPSO making your packets too fat? Jumbo frames to the rescue!

I’ll have been at Sun for 10.25 years. I circled the globe three times, crossed the Atlantic quite a bit more, met more than a few lovely and/or fascinating people, and worked on (and with) nifty technologies. All in all, it’s been good.

I’m spending the next few weeks wrapping up the administrative side of things and working out what I want to do next.

Mail works, as does Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, as well as a few flavours of IM.

Help translate Facebook into English

My wife and her High School friends use Facebook to stay in touch. Which seems to primarily revolve around sending drinks to each other. Transparency and reachability are certainly good, but, it does make you wonder how many people are going to send “buttery nipples” to the White House, and if that is actually a good thing or not.

Cynics

I’ve not had “roti prata” (yet), but the Hainanese chicken rice, the Chinese dumplings (at Din Tai Fung), the noodle soup (from some place in Food Republic) and the sushi (at Sushi Tei in Ngee Ann City) as well as pretty much any other meal (from nameless places in food courts near the office or hotel) were all quite enjoyable. That’s not what can be said of the smell of the durian I had, but it does taste quite nice (wikipedia references a quote from Anthony Burgess who described it “like eating sweet raspberry blancmange in the lavatory”).     

 Nice weather

The humidity is not quite pleasant, but overall (as long as you stay out of the midday sun) it’s quite nice.     

 Nice people

After all, they invited me here and recommended (and took me to) a number of the aforementioned food places.     

 Good destinations (though with quite pushy sales people and more good food)

Little India, Chinatown. There seem to be more places worth visiting, but as I was here for work for one or another reason I was expected to be in the office pretty much every day (summary: exhausting but it seems to have been worthwhile) that kept me from exploring those.
